ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
The Residency at 821 is a space for emerging and established artists in all fields who are looking for a place away from their usual environment to create art and share it with the public.
Located on Haywood Road area in West Asheville, NC, our residency offers residencies at no charge for up to 28 days at a time. We only have one artist in the space at a time, so residents can create freely however they wish.
Our goal is to foster an environment that allows each artist to reflect, create, and share. Collaborations between artists are welcome as well.
The public is welcome to join us at any of the shows put on by each artist in residence. Check out our Upcoming Events page or follow us on instagram to stay posted about upcoming shows.
ARTISTS
We welcome artists in all fields (visual artists, performers of all kinds, dancers, writers, musicians, film makers, etc.). Whatever your artistic style or medium, you can use the space in whatever way you see fit to display your vision to the world. Collaborations between multiple artists are welcome. Our only requirement is that you show your art at least once during your artist residency. This event is widely open to interpretation by the artist, and may include, but is not limited to, performances, workshops, readings, installations, shows, classes, etc.
Artists in residence will have access to the space 24 hours a day for the entire length of their residency. Artists are welcome to spend the night within the space, although large overnight gatherings are not permitted. Where possible, the operators of The Residency at 821 will work to connect an artist with other creators in their field to collaborate or create an accountability program. The operators will also endeavor to support the artist through our local business contacts to locate equipment whenever possible. Unfortunately, beyond providing a space to create and stay, the operators of the Residency are unable to offer additional financial assistance; likewise, artists must provide their own equipment. We encourage artists to consider applying for grants to support their stay.
SPACE
The space is approximately 680 square feet, and the ceiling is 12’ high. It consists of a single, ADA-accessible, open room on a commercial street in West Asheville, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the street wall (sheer and/or opaque curtains provided), a kitchenette (microwave, sink, refrigerator) and full bathroom. The space is lightly furnished with a table, two chairs, coffee maker, love seat that can fold down into a bed, and bedding, as well as a queen-sized blow-up mattress; any of these can be cleared from the space before the artist arrives if that is preferred. Out of town artists who do not wish to stay in the space itself should find their own accommodations.
