We welcome artists in all disciplines. We are particularly interested in art that is experimental, inter-disciplinary, and unconventional. Whatever your artistic style or medium, you can use the space in whatever way you see fit to display your vision.
Our only requirement is that you share your art at least once during your artist residency with a community offering or event. This event is widely open to interpretation by the artist, and may include, but is not limited to, performances, workshops, readings, installations, shows, classes, etc. Our space is both for artists to create and for the community to engage with their work or practice.
Artists in residence will have access to the space 24 hours a day for the entire length of their residency. Artists are welcome to spend the night within the space, although large overnight gatherings are not permitted.
Collaborations between multiple artists are welcome. Where possible, the operators of The Residency at 821 will work to connect an artist with other creators in their field to collaborate if that is of interest.
Beyond providing a space to create and stay, we are unable to offer additional financial assistance; likewise, artists must provide their own equipment. We encourage artists to consider applying for grants to support their stay.
The space is approximately 680 square feet, and the ceiling is 12’ high. It consists of a single, ADA-accessible, open room on a commercial street in West Asheville, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the street wall (sheer and/or opaque curtains and shades provided), a kitchenette (microwave, sink, refrigerator) and full bathroom.
The residency is lightly furnished with a table, two chairs, coffee maker, love seat that can fold down into a bed, and bedding, as well as a queen-sized blow-up mattress; any of these can be cleared from the space before the artist arrives if that is preferred. Out of town artists who do not wish to stay in the space itself should find their own accommodations.
The Residency at 821 is the first program of Lamplight AVL. We rely on and are so grateful for the generous support of our donors. Please join us in supporting the artists working at The Residency at 821 by making a tax deductible donation to Lamplight AVL.
